Analysis of factors of production in the termination of feedlot lambs to pasture Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Pereira,L.C.; Ítavo,L.C.V.; Mateus,R.G.; Mendonça,L.A.B.M.; Costa,J.A.A.; Bono,J.A.M.; Barbosa-Ferreira,M.; Carvalho,C.M.E..
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the factors that influence the performance of lambs in pasture confinement, by substituting a concentrate with different levels of the aerial part of cassava in relation to hematocrit indices. The experiment was conducted at the Sheep Technology Center using 56 Pantaneira sheep, of which 28 were male and 28 were female. For female lambs, the globular volume showed a decreasing quadratic effect, with a minimum inclusion of 10.24% PAM in the diet for a hematocrit index of 32.28. A linear effect was observed for the mean crude protein intake in the male lambs based on the diet provided and was estimated to be equivalent to 87.4% of the lambs’ final weight. In conclusion, mean crude protein consumption is...

Braun, Neiva; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Lima, Ronaldo Lima de; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Baldisserotto, Bernardo; Universidade Federal de Santa Maria; Dafre, Alcir Luiz; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Nuñer, Alex Pires de Oliveira; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.
This study evaluated the biochemical changes associated to successive captures of Salminus brasiliensis reared at different stocking densities. The experiment was conducted in tanks with a capacity of 1,000 L, connected to a recirculating system with temperature control and continuous aeration. Fish were stocked at densities of 30, 150 and 300 fish m-3 and the successive catches were applied at the end of the experimental period of 80 days. The biochemical changes were evaluated at the end of the trial through the parameters: hematocrit, hemoglobin, glucose and lactate in plasma and Na+, K+ and Cl- and Ca2+ in the gills. The concentration of glucose increased with the increase of stocking density as also registered for lactate concentration, except for...

Blood parameters and measurements of weight in the rehabilitation of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus, Foster 1781) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Martins,A.M.; Silva Filho,R.P.; Xavier,M.O.; Meireles,M.C.A.; Robaldo,R.B..
During the austral winter the appearance of the Magellanic penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) is common on the southern coast of Brazil. The oil pollution constitutes a major cause of death of these birds. The monitoring of the weight and blood variables is important to make decisions during the rehabilitation and release of these animals. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the penguins' survival during rehabilitation and the values of hematocrit (Hct), total plasma protein (TPP) and body weight (BW) of the birds received at Centro de Recuperação de Animais Marinhos (Recovery Centre for Sea Animals) between 2006 and 2009. The analysis took place weekly, and penguins were classified according to the outcome of the...

Effects of vitamin C and E dietary supplementation on erythrocyte parameters of layer chickens reared in high ambient temperature and humidity Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Ajakaiye,JJ; Pérez-Bello,A; Cuesta-Mazorra,M; García-Díaz,JR; Mollineda-Trujillo,Á.
A 30-day experiment involving 720 White Leghorn (L33) layer chickens of 39 weeks of age and average live weight of 1.8 ± 0.04 kg was carried out in a completely randomized design to evaluate the effects of vitamins C and E on erythrocyte parameters of layers during natural summer conditions. Birds were allotted to 4 treatments containing 0, 150 mg vitamin C, 150 mg vitamin E, and 150 mg vitamin C plus 150 mg vitamin E/kg feed. Each treatment was replicated four times. The exposure of layers to 31±3 °C and 33±0 °C ambient temperature and 84.6% and 81.5% relative humidity, inside and outside the experimental pen, during the study period caused an increase in temperature humidity index 15.5 above the threshold value of 70 established for this species. Total...

Growth and stress of dourado cultivated in cages at different stocking densities PAB
Braun,Neiva; Dafre,Alcir Luiz; Lima,Ronaldo Lima de; Beux,Luis Fernando; Brol,Fernanda Franciele; Nuñer,Alex Pires de Oliveira.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and the stress levels of juvenile dourado (Salminus brasiliensis) cultivated in cages. Fish stocked at densities of 15 (D15) and 30 (D30) fish per square meter were evaluated in a completely randomized design with three replicates. Fish were fed twice a day with extruded ration (42% crude protein). Density influenced only biomass and daily food intake, and glucose and lactate concentrations increased over time. D15 and D30 did not influence the growth of dourado. However, the increase of glucose and lactate levels over time indicates that cultivation in cages is a stressful condition for this species.

Performance, Carcass Traits, Biochemical and Hematological Profile, Ileal Microbiota and Nutrient Metabolizability in Broilers Fed Diets Containing Cell Wall of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae and Piperine Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Trindade,BS; Lima,CAR; Cardoso,VS; Direito,GM; Machado,NJB; Souza,MMS; Curvello,FA; Corrêa,GSS.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (CWSc) and piperine in broiler rations and their effects on performance, carcass traits, blood parameters, ileal microbiota and nutrient digestibility. A randomized block design with five treatments and six replicates of 10 birds was used, totaling 300 chickens. The treatments consisted of: control ration (CR); CR + avilamycin (10 mg / kg); CR + CWSc (2.0 g / kg); CR + piperine (60 mg / kg); and CR + CWSc (2.0 g / kg) + piperine (60 mg / kg). The use of isolated piperine resulted in greater weight gain from 9 to 40 days of age (2505g). The additives CWSc and piperine conjugates influenced the lower coliform count in the ceca (4.45 CFU / g) and caused...

Prevalence and chemotherapy of babesiosis among Lohi sheep in the Livestock Experiment Station, Qadirabad, Pakistan, and environs J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Rashid,A; Khan,JA; Khan,MS; Rasheed,K; Maqbool,A; Iqbal,J.
A total of 310 blood smears were collected from sheep of the Livestock Experiment Station, Qadirabad, Sahiwal district, Pakistan, and surrounding areas. The samples were examined microscopically and 30 (9.67%) were positive for babesiosis. The animals were divided into two groups (A and B) for chemotherapy. Group A sheep were treated with diminazene diaceturate while group B animals received imidocarb dipropionate. Drug efficacy was determined by negative blood smear examination. Diminazene diaceturate effectiveness against babesiosis was 80% while that of imidocarb dipropionate was 100%. Hematological studies revealed a significant decrease in hemoglobin concentrations and hematocrit values for Babesia-positive animals compared to healthy controls.

Fisheries and other human activities pose a global threat to the marine environment. Marine protected areas (MPAs) are an emerging tool to cope with such threats. In the Dutch Wadden Sea, large MPAs (covering 31% of all intertidal flats) have been created to protect shellfish-eating birds and allow recovery of important habitats. Even though shellfish fishing is prohibited in these areas, populations of shellfish-eating birds in the Wadden Sea have declined sharply. The role of shellfish fisheries in these declines is hotly debated, therefore, we investigated the effectiveness of MPAs for protecting oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus) populations. Shellfish stocks (cockles, Cerastoderma edule) were substantially higher in the MPAs, but surprisingly this...

Surviving probability indicators of landing juvenile magellanic penguins arriving along the southern Brazilian coast BABT
Rodrigues,Sandra Carvalho; Adornes,Andréa Corrado; Santos Filho,Euclydes Antônio dos; Silva Filho,Rodolfo Pinho; Colares,Elton Pinto.
The aim of this work was to monitor and study the hematocrit and weight of juvenile penguins, with and without oil cover, found alive along the southern coast of Brazil, after capture, as well as before eventual death or release. Released juvenile penguins showed higher weight and hematocrit (3.65 ± 0.06 kg and 44.63 ± 0.29%, respectively) than those that died (2.88 ± 0.08 kg and 34.42 ± 1.70%, respectively). Penguins with higher hematocrit and weight after capture had higher mean weight gain than their counterparts with smaller hematocrit and weight after the capture. Besides, juveniles with higher hematocrit and weight after the capture had higher survival rates, independent of the presence or absence of oil. The results suggested that juveniles covered...
